Lead Response, Defined
Short, sourced definitions of the terms that decide who wins service leads — each with the benchmarks and deeper reading behind it.
Speed to Lead
Speed to lead is the time that passes between a prospect submitting an inquiry and the business making its first response. It is usually measured in minutes, and research consistently shows that responding within the first 5 minutes dramatically increases the odds of qualifying and winning the lead.

Lead response time is the elapsed time between a new lead arriving and the business sending its first reply. Platforms typically track it as a median over a recent window — Yelp, for example, publishes each business’s median response time over the last 30 days — and both customers and ranking algorithms use it as a signal of reliability.

Yelp response rate is the percentage of new customer messages a business replies to, calculated over the last 30 days and displayed publicly on the business’s Yelp page next to its response time. Every ignored message lowers the rate, and any reply — including a polite decline — counts toward it.

Thumbtack Instant Reply is a built-in Thumbtack feature that automatically sends a pro’s saved first message the moment a new lead arrives, so no lead sits without a response. It is part of Thumbtack’s messaging tools in the Pro app, is free to use, and sends the same templated message to every lead.

Lead qualification is the process of determining whether a new inquiry is a genuine fit for a business — the right service, service area, timeline, and budget — before investing time in pursuing it. In home services it usually means asking a few scope questions in the first reply and politely declining requests the business doesn’t handle.

Missed lead recovery is the practice of re-engaging leads that never received a timely response or went silent after the first exchange, typically through timed follow-up messages or callbacks. Because most businesses respond slowly — and many never respond at all — recovering even a fraction of missed leads directly recovers marketing spend that was already paid.

Thumbtack Front Desk is a concierge service built into Thumbtack that responds to a pro’s new direct leads on the pro’s behalf, using a first message the pro customizes. Thumbtack announced it in March 2022, and its published materials say the Front Desk team typically responds in about 2 minutes — days, evenings, and weekends — so no direct lead sits without a first reply.

Request a Quote is Yelp’s messaging flow that lets a customer describe a project and send it to a business — and, when they opt for multiple quotes, to several similar businesses at once — without making a call. From the pro’s side, each request is a message lead: Yelp measures how fast and how consistently the business answers, and displays both numbers publicly on its Yelp page. Yelp reports that 84% of users prefer Request a Quote over calling.

After-hours leads are customer inquiries that arrive outside a business’s working hours — evenings, nights, weekends, and early mornings. They are half the market, not an edge case: in LeadWinner’s analysis of more than 100,000 US home-service leads, 50.3% arrived outside Monday–Friday 9 AM–6 PM local time, including 25.3% between 6 PM and 6 AM. A business that answers only during office hours is dark for roughly half of its incoming demand.

The average lead response time — how long a typical business takes to answer a new inquiry — is measured in hours, not minutes. Harvard Business Review’s audit of 2,241 U.S. companies found an average of 42 hours, with 23% never responding at all, and a test of 433 sales teams found only about 7% replied within the first 5 minutes. Customers move faster: in LeadWinner’s data, those who write back do so at a median of 11 minutes.

Lead follow-up is the practice of re-contacting a lead who hasn’t replied — short, spaced messages (or a call) sent after the first response to restart the conversation. It exists because silence is the default outcome: in LeadWinner’s analysis of 100,000+ US home-service leads, 56.2% of leads that received a first reply never wrote back in that thread. Follow-ups are the lever that recovers a share of them.

Lead response time benchmarks for home services cluster around three numbers. The research bar: reply within 5 minutes, where the odds of qualifying a lead are about 21x higher than at 30 minutes. The reality: the average company takes 42 hours, and only about 7% of teams reply within 5 minutes. The customer’s clock: in LeadWinner’s analysis of 100,000+ US home-service leads, customers who write back do so at a median of 11 minutes.
